Instagrammer’s guide through Zagreb

Zagreb (1)

Planning a whole trip by yourself is no easy thing. That’s why we usually resort to tripadvisor.com or various travel blogs to get the best insight about a city or country.

As we’ve spent quite some days in this colorful city, full of life, culture and amusement, we’ve decided to give you guys the scoop on some of the most Instagrammable spots for you to capture. We’ve already posted some on @rawision.media, but read further and you’ll find quite some valuable travel tips.

The Zagreb Cathedral

Considered ‘the most stylish and eloquent architectural realization of the Gothic style southeast of the Alps’, the cathedral was finished in 1217 but has undergone many restoration works since. Camera shots don’t do it justice, you have to see it to properly enjoy it. If the facade is amazing, then the interior is stunning: an amalgam of stained glass, stone and metal, religion, history and architecture, all in the same building. If you’re on a budget trip, you’re in luck, as there’s free entrance all day long. Tho, we’d recommend going mid-day, as you’ll also enjoy the sun coming though the stained glass, playing around in colorful shapes and sizes.

La Štruk

Time to go on our way – go uphill, on Kaptol Street, make the first right, get lost for a while and finally reach your destination: La Štruk – the one and only restaurant in whole of Zagreb, where štrukli is served. Štrukli (n.) – traditional Croatian specialty, typical to the Zagreb area, made of a special dough and fresh cow cheese, with a variety of other ingredients. (Or so their menu says).

Nonetheless, the best meal of the whole trip. We highly recommend the place, the prices are super affordable, you cannot eat an entire portion and the hipster set-up and chilliness of the place gives you the best vibe. MUST try is: walnuts and honey for the sweet goers and truffles for the salty lovers.

Zagreb Old Town

Finish your meal and hop onto the next hot spot, or better said, spots. This enchanting capital’s old town is full of wonders, small gardens, doorways, passages, old houses, you name it. The streets that go away from the Stone Gate and to St. Mark’s Church are just rad. Opaticka Street gives you some of those worthy capturing spots of Instagram. Best part of all these – wandering around, lost on the streets of a city is free of charge and a hell of a fun time.

St. Mark’s Church

When you’re done getting lost in picture perfect spots, you reach another of Zagreb’s landmarks: a 13th century church in the heart of the city, with a colorful tiled roof, representing ‘the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right side’ according to lonelyplanet.com. The church is open to the public and can be visited during open hours, provided you aren’t as lucky as we were, to see a somewhat-aristocratic wedding going on.

Museum of Broken Relationships

Mother of all hipster museums on the planet. Only 2 in the world, one in LA, the other in Zagreb.  Museum’s made of the stories people have and objects they send. It offers people the chance to overcome heartbreaks and emotional collapse though creativity – contributing to the museum’s, collection gives people some sort of closure for their grief. As you might have supposed, there is an entrance fee – 30kn standard price, 20kn for students. But trust me, it’s all worth it – some of the stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry and some will give you cold chills down your spine – perfect combo of feelings and modern, innovative art.

Lotršcak Tower

Zagreb (1)

There’s no Instagram post if you don’t get up to a view point to capture the whole city.  Well, for Zagreb the point is Lotršcak Tower – another 13th century establishment, just like St. Mark’s Church. The tower it’s said to be the best preserved structure from the old town’s fortification. Quite the flight of stairs and 20kn to get up there and enjoy the 360° view. You’ll be able to rest your eye on the famous Zagreb funicular, on St. Mark’s Church from above, St. Catherine’s Cathedral and also the monumental Zagreb Cathedral.

Zagreb (16)Bastion n° 19

Even though I know you, a legit Instagrammer, cannot fathom the concept of ‘enough photos to post’, maybe it’s high time for a refresher. THE place in town with amazing American craft beer is right next to the Croatian National Theater of Zagreb – another landmark you need to capture. You’ll have there THE BEST beer of your life, a cool place for your check-ins and most importantly, the best personnel in the world. We met there one of the coolest, most open-minded and traveled bartenders in the world, Marin Čuček. Machu Pichu, Cuba, Portugal or Dubai are some of the best destinations in the world, and he’s got interesting stories about all of them. Definitely worth checking it out.
